Series and Episode Descriptions

First series - 2008

Sidetracked  •  Firewall  •  One Step Behind

1. Sidetracked

What connects the shocking suicide of a young woman and the vicious murder of a government minister? Inspector Kurt Wallander's investigation uncovers wrongdoing and corruption that extends to the heart of the Swedish establishment.

2. Firewall

The death of man from a heart attack and the apparently unrelated murder of a taxicab driver leads Wallander to a conspiracy that stretches far beyond the borders of Sweden.

3. One Step Behind

Three young friends are shot in the woods during an elaborate Midsummer's Eve picnic. Then one of Inspector Wallander's colleagues is also found murdered. Is this the same killer, and what could the connection be?

Second Series - 2010

Faceless Killers  •  The Man Who Smiled  •  The Fifth Woman

1. Faceless Killers

Entering an isolated farmhouse on what he believes is a routine call, Inspector Wallander discovers a bloodbath. An old man has been tortured and beaten to death and his wife is barely alive. As her life slowly slips away, she whispers to Wallander a word that sounds like "foreigners". When her dying word is leaked to the press by the police, there is an outbreak of racist reprisals in Ystad. Meanwhile, Wallander's personal life is a shambles. On top of that, the fallout from the case causes him to doubt everything, even his abilities as a police officer.

2. The Man Who Smiled

After killing a man in the line of duty, Wallander finds himself spiralling into depression. He has just decided to leave the police when an old friend, Sten Torstensson, a solicitor, approaches him to investigate the recent death of his father in a car accident. A report explains that the keys had fallen from the ignition, something that could never have happened if his father had smashed the car while driving. Wallander later learns that his solicitor friend has been found dead - a possible suicide - and realises that he was wrong not to listen. Against his better judgement, a troubled Wallander returns to work to head what may now have become a double murder case.

3. The Fifth Woman

When Wallander investigates the disappearance of an elderly bird-watcher, he discovers a gruesome and meticulously planned murder: a body impaled in a trap of sharpened bamboo poles. When another man is reported missing, once again Wallander's life is on hold as he works tirelessly to find a link between the series of vicious murders. Gradually, he comes to realise that he is on the trail of a serial killer bent on revenge. Meanwhile, he becomes close to one of the key suspects.

Third series - 2012

An Event in Autumn  •  The Dogs of Riga  •  Before the Frost

Kenneth Branagh returns to his BAFTA award-winning role as Inspector Kurt Wallander in three new feature length episodes of the acclaimed detective drama based on Henning Mankell’s best-selling novels.
Having relocated to the Swedish countryside, Wallander’s fresh start is crushed when the remains of a young woman are found buried in his back garden in An Event in Autumn. In The Dogs of Riga Wallander travels to Latvia to assist the Rigan police in the hunt for killers but soon finds himself entangled in a web of corruption with no one to trust. Before the Frost finds Wallander fearing for the safety of his daughter’s childhood friend when it appears she has become involved with a religious fanatic.
