Best-selling Swedish crime author Mari Jungstedt chose the beloved tourist destination as the location for her “Anders Knutas”  crime series. Encouraged by the successful collaboration of ZDF and Scandinavian broadcasters in the field of high-quality detective series, Jungstedt agreed to let ZDF recast her hero as the German inspector Robert Anders. His investigations are doubly challenging, since he’s a foreigner, and the tight-lipped island community doesn’t like foreigners sticking their noses into its affairs…

Played by Walter Sittler, Inspector Anders is an engaging father of two, whose wife is portrayed by Danish actress Paprika Steen (“Festen”). Anders is an intuitive crime solver who can always count on the full support of his Swedish colleagues, among whom former Pippi Longstocking star Inger Nilsson is the most familiar face. His radius of activity not only includes the picturesque town of Visby, but also the island’s cliffs, woods and coastal waters – a beguiling setting for murders of all kinds...

In one episode, a party goes awry and leaves one man dead and several lives shattered. In another, a little girl is kidnapped, and her father murdered before a ransom can be paid. There’s the mysterious case of an archaeology student killed according to an ancient Viking ritual, and the deaths of a teen and of the photographer who took explicit pictures of her. Other cases involve a dashing art dealer, an explosives expert with a checkered past, and two young women bestially killed with an axe…

The TV movie collection is filmed on location in Gotland and on mainland Sweden. It combines suspense, taut pacing, strong characters and unsettling crimes in a landscape of resplendent beauty.
